Installation of TeXmacs

1. Download the package

Download the distribution which corresponds to your system:

You may also download the source code and compile TeXmacs yourself.

2. Unpack the package

cd into the directory where you wish to install TeXmacs and type

    gunzip -c TeXmacs-[version]-[your system].tar.gz | tar xvf -

All files will be unpacked into the directory TeXmacs-[version]. This [installation directory] will be needed when setting the environment variables.

3. Set the environment variables

Depending on your shell, either type

    export TEXMACS_PATH=[installation directory]
    export PATH=$TEXMACS_PATH/bin:$PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$TEXMACS_PATH/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

    setenv TEXMACS_PATH [installation directory]
    setenv PATH $TEXMACS_PATH/bin:$PATH
    setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH $TEXMACS_PATH/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

4. Run !

    texmacs &

5. Be cool...

Please let me know if you like or dislike the program. It is very useful for me to have a rough idea about the number of permanent users and for what applications you are interested in TeXmacs. Furthermore, I am glad to receive your suggestions and problems, no matter how silly they may seem to you. In the near future I also plan to create a mailing list and maybe a newsgroup.

6. Comments and problems

You do not need to download guile when using the binary distributions.
It should be noticed that TeXmacs uses Guile/Scheme as an extension language. For the convenience of the user, our TeXmacs distribution includes a copy of the dynamically linked guile library, as well as some standard scheme programs which come along with guile. If guile was already installed on your system, TeXmacs will basically ignore this. In order to use a guile system which has already been installed on your system, you should cd into the installation directory and remove the following files:
```
        rm -f lib/libguile*
        rm -rf progs/ice-9
      
```
I get a message texmacs: no such file or command when trying to run texmacs &.
Explanation: You do not have all required shared libraries to run TeXmacs. For instance, you might have the wrong version of libX.so.
Solution: Try the static binary TeXmacs distribution or compile the source code.

TeXmacs fails to produce certain fonts.
Explanation 1: You did not install the right font or you are using an outdated TeX system.
Explanation 2: TeXmacs does not manage to cooporate with your TeX system.
Explanation 3: You do not have permissions to update metafont search paths.
Solution: Check the configuration of your TeX system. preferably use a standard TeX distribution like TeTeX, or download some precompiled fonts.
